Only Consumers Can Bend the Cost Curve
Alexandria, VA --Today the Council for Affordable Health Insurance
(CAHI) released "Only Consumers Can Bend the
Cost Curve," which demonstrates that consumer
driven health plans are the only proven method to
lowering health care costs.
Over the past few months we have seen several
proposals to "bend the cost curve" and bring down the
cost of health care over the coming decades.
President Obama, Congress, and Budget Director
Peter Orszag have all said by
eliminating "unnecessary care" the system can
save $700 billion.
However, CAHI believes that government-imposed,
top-down methods offered by administration officials
and members of Congress will not lead to a less-
costly system. Our new paper shows that when
consumers are given information and control of their
own health care dollars, they become value-
conscious consumers in the health care marketplace.
This paper also considers the common critcisms of
consumer driven plans and how recent experience
has proven them untrue.
