Medical Savings Accounts/Health Savings Accounts - A CAHI Hallmark

Since its inception, CAHI has been a leading advocate for medical savings accounts (MSAs). The Archer MSA pilot program that began on January 1, 1997 has been expanded and made permanent under the new name "Health Savings Accounts," or HSAs.

We believe that like MSAs, HSA plans are an affordable health care financing option that puts consumers in control of their health are decisions. HSAs lower health insurance premiums, putting more money in the hands of patients, who can decide where and when to receive medical care.

The typical HSA plan combines a high-deductible health plan with a tax-free savings account. Routine medical expenses are paid from the account. When the high deductible is satisfied, benefits are paid from the insurance policy. Unspent HSA funds are allowed to accumulate from year to year, providing even more protection for account holders.

For more information about HSAs, including frequently asked questions, please visit CAHI's HSA Info Center.
