CAHI's Agenda for Affordable Health Insurance

The Council for Affordable Health Insurance believes that all Americans should have access to true health insurance — that is, affordable policies that promote consumer choice and the doctor-patient relationship and that are largely free from third-party interference. The legislative agenda outlined below aims to ensure that health insurance is available, personal and affordable.

Tax Fairness
The current tax policy toward health insurance should be reformed so that the tax break goes directly to the insured individual.

Medical Savings Accounts
Tax-free Medical Savings Accounts should be available to anyone who purchases health insurance.

Safety Nets
Anyone who has been denied health insurance or charged a substantially higher premium because of a preexisting medical condition should have the opportunity to get health insurance from a state-based or national high-risk pool.

Consumer Choice
Consumers should have the option of choosing the additional benefits they want in their insurance policy, including no additional benefits at all.

Medicare Reform
The Medicare program must be fundamentally reformed to give participants more choices and greater access to private-sector policies.
